Have you ever been to a psychic, had your palm read, your tarot cards done… anything like that? When I was growing up, my mum loved going to get a psychic reading done from time to time.

I’m sure she was going long before I ever found out about it, and honestly, I don’t know what I would’ve thought of it when I was 8 or 9 years old. I mean, I was barely wrapping my head around the fact that my Auntie Ruby was my aunt because she was my mum’s sister! Seriously? How did my mum have a sister? Obviously she has always been a mum… my mum, right?

How in the world would my mum have explained a psychic to my naïve brain?

The reality is, this is a which came first scenario, the chicken or the egg? I don’t really remember if I knew of psychics before one saved my life. What I do know is, I’ll never doubt their ability.

Now, when I say a psychic saved my life, I don’t mean that some random dude pushed me away from the path of a moving bus when I was walking down the street, and he happened to be psychic.

This is a story of one person’s ability to connect to forces that the rest of us cannot see, or sometimes even comprehend, and used that ability to courageously seek out my mum, in an effort to save my life. And it worked.

Why I Needed Saving… from a Psychic

You see, I grew up in an abusive home. Right from the time I was introduced to my abuser, his domination began. First, with put down’s, name calling and belittling nicknames, and over the next decade, increased into become violent and sexual.

I didn’t speak up because that naïve brain of mine that I mentioned early thought that adults knew everything. Honestly, I thought that everyone around me knew what was happening and that I just wasn’t worth saving.

Of course, the way he treated me reinforced those feelings of not being good enough or worthy of love or kindness.

And because he was preying on her insecurities throughout this decade as well, belittling her and ensuring she felt that no other man would have her, he was safe to continue abusing me behind closed doors.

By the time I was twelve, I thought I would have to kill him to escape or die trying.  I was living a double life – one where at school I was “normal”, and the other at home where I was always fighting for my life.

How a Psychic Saved My Life

And then it happened.

My mum came home, more serious than I had ever seen her before. She sat me down at the kitchen table and asked, “Has he been touching you?”

My first instinct was to say no. I’m not sure if it was the humiliation or the belief that she already knew, so why was she now asking?

But I didn’t let myself down. Instead, I mustered the courage and I confirmed that he had.

Of course, I had to ask my mum why she was asking me this now. What happened to bring this into her mind today?

I don’t know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t this.

“A psychic at work told me”, she blurted.

The dazed look in my eyes and my complete silence must have tipped her off, so she went into detail. Apparently, a colleague of hers was psychic.

They’d chatted around the water cooler and in meetings and such. Otherwise, they didn’t see much of each other at work.

He’d never been to our home, met me or my abuser, or had any hint of a conversation with my mum where she confided in him that she was unhappy at home, in any way.

But there he was crossing the street at work that day, when he looked up and saw my mum crossing in the opposite direction. He grabbed her arm and asked her to come with him to the side of the road and told her that her husband was touching me.

Plain and simple. Just like that.

Of course, I’m sure there was ultimately more to the conversation than that, but that’s what I remember my mum telling me at twelve years old.

The Choice My Mum Made

My mum came home, struggling the entire drive with how she would approach this with me, thinking she was going to come across as ridiculous asking me this.

She really didn’t suspect anything and now to be told by a work acquaintance who is a self-proclaimed psychic that her daughter’s being abused… how would she explain that to me when I confirmed this wasn’t happening?

Well, it was happening. I confirmed the psychic was right, and we got out of that house with nothing but our suitcases, a car and our family dog.

Within 24-hours, my life was different. Sure, we spent the next few years convinced he would figure out why we left and hunt us down to shut us up. I wouldn’t say I felt safe in my home or lived a wonderful life after that day.

No, growing up with abuse changes you. A lot of work had to be done on myself worth, compassion and respect of myself. I needed to change my beliefs that I was worthless and useless. And most of all, I needed to change my behaviour – always looking for someone or something to prove my worthiness. My choices in boyfriends, for example, was not fabulous.

The Change That Psychic Made

But while I struggled all throughout my teens with my identity crisis and self-loathing, I was safe. When I came home at the end of the day, it was the soft place to fall that all homes should be.

My mum was, and still is, supportive, loving and respected me. I knew the rules, but I also knew that if I broke them, my “punishment” would be knowing I had disappointed my mum.

I didn’t have to worry about fists being raised or how I would explain away my bruising or cuts. No one was actively trying to hurt me. I wasn’t fighting someone else for my life.

I was still fighting for my life, of course. But that battle was within.

When I think of what my life could’ve been if that psychic never spoke up – if he wasn’t psychic in the first place…

My life, and quality of it, all changed because of the actions of one man. No words will ever be able to show him my gratitude. Although, side note, my mum tracked him down recently and I was able to email him with my thoughts of gratitude. I suppose he always knew how grateful I was, and still am, being psychic and all!

The Impact

I’m not psychic, but I do feel a deep connection to my Higher Self. I listen to my gut instincts, and I allow the Universe to lead me into opportunities through what others would call “coincidences”. And the fact that my life was saved by a psychic means that the door to Universal energy and souls, angels and guides… all of it, was opened nice and wide.

I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that my mum was supposed to be crossing the street at that moment that day, and so was the psychic. There’s no doubt in my mind that once she was given the information, she followed her Higher Self and went ahead and spoke to me about it. And that instinct I had to say no, but didn’t, was the opportunity I needed to change my life.

Life is a very different place for me these days, all because I chose to look for the opportunity instead of wallow in the “failure”. You can’t tell me mindset doesn’t have anything to do with it!

And, of course, I likely wouldn’t even be here to become this person, if it wasn’t for the psychic that saved my life.

Have you ever encountered someone who changed your life in a positive way so completely, just in one moment? Do they know they had such a profound impact on you? If you could tell them, would you? How would you react if you were the person who positively impacted someone else’s life?
