Have you ever levitated?
This story begins with me following my gut and a series of “coincidences” that changed my life forever, leading me to one of the most profound experiences of my life: That time I literally levitated off the ground, just me and my chair.
You see, after putting myself down every single day, all day, my Grandma’s spirit came to me while I was riding the bus and simply said, “NO”. That was it. I could no longer talk down to myself in the same way. But it didn’t mean that I felt healed or loved myself.
The truth was, I was far from healing. My journey was actually just beginning.
I mentioned at the end of the last episode/blog that I found my way to bookstores and began devouring all kinds of self-development and spiritual growth books. I didn’t open a single book about overcoming child abuse. In fact, I don’t even remember ever picking one up.
No, right from the beginning, my healing journey was about me, not what happened to me. And I believe that that had a very specific impact on my ability to heal. Because it is MY choice; MY ability. For a very long time, I truly believed that someone else was responsible for “fixing” me. I would find love and respect of myself through someone else.
Before I Levitated
Back in 1997, I was a student Massage Therapist in London, Ontario, Canada. We ran a weekly student clinic as part of our training. I had one client with a pretty severe injury, who came for treatment with me every single week.
This client, let’s call her Pat, was amazing. We got along wonderfully, and I really felt like I was able to help her in her recovery. Now Pat was a kind and beautiful person, but she didn’t strike me as being spiritual. Our conversations were never about the Universe, energy or spirituality. Instead, they were about sports, muscles, and rehab.
So, imagine my surprise when on one of our last visits, Pat came in chatting all about a Reiki treatment she had. Now, if you don’t know, Reiki is energy work – the movement and acceptance of Universal energy, accessed from one person to another, to be used for their Highest good.
I was so interested in Reiki now that as soon as her treatment was over, I collected the phone number for this Reiki Master, Deborah Carter, from Pat, and called it straight away.
Finding My Way
When I enquired about Reiki with Deb, she informed me that she was running a Reiki Level One training class that coming weekend and asked if I would like to join. I had never even had a Reiki treatment, and I didn’t have the money for a full training session, but I was so interested that I signed up anyway and went to figure out where I’d come up with $100 afterwards.
That weekend was a game-changer for me… although it wasn’t the weekend I levitated. Instead, during my attunement to level one Reiki, my hands felt like they were on fire, literally. It took everything I could to not open my eyes to check. Not that it was painful, but it was extremely intense. I’ve never felt anything like it before or since.
Becoming a Reiki Master
By 1998, I was living in a different city, had been attuned by Deb to level two Reiki, had been on a few of her Shamanic retreats, and was now feeling the urge to continue my Reiki training with level three, becoming a Master.
Only, because it was nearly a 2-hour drive away, and level three was taught over a few weekends, I decided it was time to find a new Master – one closer to me, for extensive trainings.
I did my research, which was difficult back then as we didn’t have computers or internet like we have today. But, nonetheless, I found a wonderful Master who could pick up with my training where I had left off with Deb.
The attunement to Reiki is a sacred time of placing intention and the ancient symbols into the student’s aura, through a very specific ritual. In each level’s attunement, the intention and the symbols are different, dependent on the level the student is rising to.
Here’s what we knew. Deb had trained me in the traditional Usui method of Reiki, in which there are certain symbols. The first three we had determined I understood and knew quite well. The Master symbols I had not yet seen, so we had no way to verify.
You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know!
Here’s what we didn’t know. My new Master was now training me in a slightly different, subset of Reiki that used the same three entry level symbols but had completely different Master symbols.
It sounds complicated but it’s really not. The Master symbols she was about to place into my aura with the intention of me becoming a Master Reiki healer, had never been used in my aura for an attunement before.
They were brand new to me.
There’s a reason you do your training in stages. There’s a growth process involved. You let Universal energy tell you when you’re ready for the next level. It’s sacred and a special relationship that develops over time.
And there’s a process you undergo when you have access to Universal energy – a healing journey.
My Growth Since My Reiki Journey Began
This is the journey I had been on since my level one attunement. It had seen me have revelations about the control I have in my life, have a new take on forgiveness (which we’ll cover in the next episode), and most importantly, saw me take my power back.
I was no longer a victim of abuse. I was a survivor. My abuse wasn’t about me, it was about my abuser. I didn’t need to identify with it any longer. It was something I could use to build upon.
In fact, I was starting to realise by this point in my life that I was becoming who I was because of my abuse, not despite it. And, as you might suspect, I was also finding my inner strength and love, respect and acceptance of myself.
Very large personal, emotional and spiritual changes were happening within me, all since I first learned about Reiki. And now here I was, on the cusp of taking a ginormous leap into becoming a Master – one that was sure to propel me forward at accelerated speed.
I had absolutely no idea how right I was.
Because I wasn’t just going to the next level in my spiritual journey by becoming a Master. I was having Master symbols that were new to me placed into my aura, taking me from essentially nothing to everything, all in a single moment.
And this is what it felt like.
That Time I Levitated
I was sitting in a wing-back wooden chair, arms resting on the arm rests, eyes closed, facing a wall with enough space for my Master to walk around me. My focus was on my breath and opening myself to receive the Master symbols and energy that would follow.
The moment she placed the Master symbols into my aura, I flew.
Levitating off the ground, my chair and I rose towards the ceiling. I gripped the chair with my hands, sure my knuckles were white, but still not opening my eyes.
The top of my head didn’t just tingle, it opened. It literally felt as though a portal had opened into my crown chakra. I could feel the energy enter into this portal and trickle down into every cell of my body.
I was getting nauseous now with the levitation because I wasn’t just floating in the air, I was rocking about. It felt like my head would touch the ceiling at any moment, I was so high up.
And, just as I prepared for a “thunk” on my head, I started to feel myself and the chair slowly descend back to the ground.
Each leg of the chair made contact separately: 1, 2, 3, 4.
I was so moved by my experience that I couldn’t open my eyes – partly because I didn’t want it to end.
It was so soothing, filled with warmth and a knowing. I felt as though I had downloaded every bit of information that existed in the Universe.
Everything Changed after I Levitated
And that’s the moment I knew, beyond a shadow of doubt, that I am spirit having a human experience.
Before I even opened my eyes, I knew everything had changed. The way I perceive myself and my experiences, who I choose to be in this world, and what I make of my life, all changed and became crystal clear.
And that’s how it happened – how I levitated, and also how I propelled myself into the world of energy and spirit, ultimately kick-starting my healing journey.
For the next leg of my healing and spiritual journey, I needed to learn how to forgive myself and others… particularly my abuser. And I did that by meeting my Higher Self. But that’s in our next spiritual series solo episode!
