Becoming a Successful Entrepreneur

by Lisa Cybaniak

Rob Moore is sharing his top tips on how to becoming a successful entrepreneur. And he should know! He went from 50K in debt to being a multi-millionaire in just 4 short years. You know what they say? Learn from the best!

If you’re an entrepreneur, then no doubt you know how empowering it is to be your own boss, set your own schedule, have the freedom to work when you want, for how long you want, right?

The truth is, most entrepreneurs work so hard, especially in the first couple of years, that the main reasons they went into business for themselves – time and financial freedom – are moot.

Today, we’re talking about the steps you can take within yourself, and your business, to create an atmosphere of success as an entrepreneur.

Rob Moore is a self-made multi-millionaire, sought-after public speaker, author, co-founder of Progressive Property – the UK’s leading property training company – and Progressive Success. He’s also the host of the wildly successful podcast the “Disruptive Entrepreneur” and now the “Money” podcast.

There’s no doubt that Rob knows what it’s like to be successful, but we want tips from someone who’s been in the trenches, so to speak; someone who knows what it’s like to not be successful, just starting out, and looking for those golden nuggets of advice that could change everything.

Meet Rob Moore

Well, Rob Moore is our guy! You see, when he was just about to turn 27, he was a whopping 50K in debt, working out of his father’s pub. But a serious health scare for his Dad changed Rob’s life forever.

Something clicked inside him, making him realise that he wanted more; he wanted to live to his full potential. What happened next turned Rob from a struggling artist with few prospects, into a self-made multi-millionaire in just 4 short years.

And now Rob is here to share all his amazing tips for the rest of us, to help us grow into our full potential; to be the entrepreneur we know we can be.

Rob isn’t holding anything back in this episode, talking about his journey from rags to riches, his Dad’s health, and of course, his top EIGHT tips to get your business where you want and need it to be. He’s telling it like it is, being the disruptive entrepreneur that he is now famous for.

If you’re ready to get off the struggle train and step into your own, then this episode is for you.

So, let’s dive right in!

Break out of your comfort zone

You don’t need to get dramatically out of your comfort zone to make huge progress as an entrepreneur. Rob recommends you take a ‘progressive discomfort’ approach instead.

This means you break things down so that instead of taking a massive leap that would send you spiralling outside your comfort zone, you take much smaller steps that can accumulate over time, building your confidence.

Rob uses the example of adding a little extra weight at the gym. That small amount of additional weight may not seem like a lot but increasing by that small amount every week starts to add up fast.

Get admin support

It’s so easy to tell ourselves that we don’t have the money to invest in administrative support, but Rob reminds us that all that time we are taking to complete our own admin work is time away from the work we could be doing to actually make sales, translating into income. Therefore, the cost of getting admin support is minimal against the cost of not gaining those sales.

Get a mentor or coach to grow as an entrepreneur

Rob walks us down the path he took to becoming a successful entrepreneur, which included getting into the realm of properties – a field he admittedly knew nothing about. But he did have a business partner who had that knowledge and expertise that he could rely on to guide and teach him.

And as his business grew, he turned to other coaches to help him grow and expand his business into different streams of income. And that’s exactly what he recommends to you!

Work ON your business, not just in your business

This is one of my favourite tips of Rob’s to become a successful entrepreneur. So many of us get caught up in the day-to-day work we do in our businesses that we forget to stop and work ON our business.

Rob suggests looking at different partnerships you could get involved in and come up with a strategy or plan for your business on a regular basis. As things grow and evolve, it’s important that you are adapting your strategies to come up with the best plan for your business.

“Start Now, Get Perfect Later”

This is actually the title of one of Rob’s many books he’s written, and it’s one of his top tips. Rob says most entrepreneurs are taking too long to launch or release their products or services. He reminds us that you don’t have to have it all figured out, nor does it need to be perfect.

In fact, when you put a ‘perfect’ package together, you’ve really put together the perfect package for YOU. In order to make sure it’s the perfect package for your market, you need feedback.

And that means you can launch that course or other offering with just the first stages complete and work on it as your market is responding in turn.

Leverage free marketing & advertising

As an entrepreneur, there is so much you can do with social media without paying a dime on ads or marketing services.

Rob is a big fan of the power of Facebook groups, for example. He has a tremendous following on Facebook, and he uses groups to run polls to get real-time feedback about whatever he’s brainstorming next, something he’s already launched, or something he’s looking to tweak.

Of course, there are so many social media platforms, and Rob is in a position now to have an entire team that can leverage all of them. But when you’re just starting out, be realistic about where your market is, and the audience you want to build. What works on LinkedIn probably won’t work on Instagram.

Rob is a big fan of re-purposing content, which is a great way to reduce the time you’re spending on creating new posts every day across all platforms. However, choose the platform that works the best for your brand. Don’t spread yourself thin by trying to master them all.

Work smarter as an entrepreneur, not harder

This is a classic expression across all types and sizes of businesses, so it’s not surprising that Rob brings this up as one of his top tips. His take on working smarter includes those partnerships he mentioned earlier.

What partnerships could you create where you can have access to each other’s skill sets and audiences?

Personally, I do some key partnerships through affiliate marketing for courses and other offerings that I believe in. For example, I have two friends and colleagues whose businesses are very similar to mine, but different enough that we are not targeting the same market. We each have our niche which means we are not competitors, but we do work extremely well together.

I’ve partnered with each of them to promote various courses and support groups they are running, which allows them exposure to my audience. Of course, in turn they do the same for me.

That means, I don’t have to create a course for coaches, or a course on being confident in front of the camera. While gaining confidence is one of my expertise, training people on being in front of a camera is not. So, I refer my audience to people I know and trust will take excellent care of them.

Get around other entrepreneurs

Being an entrepreneur can be a lonely business, so it’s no wonder Rob is recommending you expand your base, get a wider peripheral view, get motivated and inspired by, and learn from others.

The best way to do this is to go out to exhibitions, shows and talks that are in your field of expertise. Mingling can be an overwhelming thought for some, but if we look back to Rob’s first step – get out of your comfort zone – is there a way for you to break it down into a smaller, and more manageable, step?

For example, you could bring a friend or family member, so you don’t feel so exposed. Or you could go with a plan to collect business cards and pamphlets from the different booths so you can email them an introduction the following day.

Remember, you want to be thinking about your plan or strategy for your business and making partnerships that will allow you to work smarter, not harder. What better way to do that then to get out there and meet other people working in a similar field, but with a distinctive brand?

More from this episode

My favourite of Rob’s top tips is to start now and get perfect later! Truth be told, I used to be a perfectionist. Shifting out of that mindset was difficult, but the change in my business is palpable.

In our interview I share the example of my free 30-Day Challenge that I though of in December 2018 and launched on New Year’s Day, 2019. I had to create 30 separate tasks and emails to go along side them. Each day included a new video and was dropped into their inbox first thing in the morning.

It was a ton of work, but I didn’t fret over getting 30-days of content ready to go in just 3 days. No, that would be impossible! Instead, I set up the basic email sequence, created a plan for what I thought I wanted to include, created the first couple videos, and then some graphics to use on social media to let my audience know of the offer. And then I waited.

Would anyone even want to take the challenge? Of course, the answer came in swiftly, so I then needed to commit to a content creation schedule. But was my original plan what would work best for the participants?

I took a poll on my social media platforms and asked for feedback in the email sequence. I used the results of both to steer me in the right direction, offering them what THEY wanted, not what I thought they should want. The result was a huge success!

I’ve run the challenge for a full year and have not needed to tweak anything. It’s driven thousands of new viewers to my website and onto my mailing list, while giving something of real value, for free. And that’s done a tremendous amount for my credibility and trust factor.

The point is, you don’t have to be perfect. In fact, the more you try to make your offering perfect before you launch, the more you risk losing sight of what your following actually wants and needs. You end up creating something that’s perfect for you, not necessarily your perfect client. And every day that you don’t launch, you’re losing potential income.

So, what are you waiting for? What’s stopping you from launching next week?
