How are you handling the challenges you face in life? We all have them, and while some people seem to be “lucky” in life, the truth is, we all have choices to make every moment of every day. Those choices either hold us back or propel us forward.
Today we’re talking about how you can turn challenges into opportunities, whether we’re talking about your personal or professional life, during coronavirus and beyond.
Vina Rose is a Sicilian singer/songwriter, living in London England, who has performed alongside Andrea Bocelli! She’s performed across numerous festivals, on TV shows, in theatre, and has even worked with radio stations to produce original theme tunes.
Vina began singing on stage when she was just 4 years old. By the time she was 14, she had already begun her career as an artist, appearing on screen on Top of the Pop, MTV, BBC and ITV.
Meet Vina Rose
Leaving a popular TV show career behind, along with her home, friends and family, to move to London was a difficult decision. But it was one Vina knew she needed to make in order to grow and thrive as an artist, and person. And it paid off as she released “Breathe Again”, her debut single in 2019 and is now about to release her EP “Crossroads” on the 24th April 2020.
This was not luck. This was choice. Vina Rose made some very difficult decisions along the way, worked hard, was consistent, kept her eye on her goal, and pushed herself out of her comfort zone in order to get to this point. And that’s what she’s still doing now amidst the coronavirus lock down we’re all facing.
Opportunities are not always pretty
Opportunities don’t always spring up with a big sign on them that scream, “Grab hold of me, I promise it will be worth it!” In fact, most opportunities don’t look or feel fabulous in the moment. We experience them as full on challenges. Sometimes the challenge seems so great, we can’t imagine how we’ll get through it, never mind turn it into something positive.
Vina Rose is going to share with us her secret to turning challenge into opportunity – a crucial life skill, in my opinion, and one that sets the “lucky” apart from the “unlucky”.
So, let’s dive right in!
Overcome the challenge through patience
Vina says patience with herself is key for her when turning challenge into opportunity. How many of us are guilty of deciding on something we want, including personal development and growth, and wanting it RIGHT NOW?
Be patient with yourself. Honour where you’re at and what you need to get to where you want to be. That includes being realistic with the time it may take for you to learn and grow.
Consistency
This is something I’m sure you’ve heard before, but how great are you at implementing this one? It goes hand in hand with patience, in my opinion. That’s because, when you start something, you’re naturally looking for evidence that it’s working. If you don’t give yourself enough time for that evidence to build, you tend to give up – quit while you’re ahead, as they say.
Think of it this way. You wouldn’t plant a seed and return the next morning, being disappointed it hasn’t sprouted into a full-grown tree, decide to never water or feed it nutrients again, would you?
No! You’d understand that it needs far more time to germinate and grow. And you’d honour that. So why are you reluctant to do the same for yourself?
Make mistakes!
This one is a true challenge for anyone who is a perfectionist, that’s for sure. Let’s face it, most people do everything they can to avoid making mistakes, mainly because of how it makes us feel.
But Vina says it’s so important to make mistakes – after all, it’s through our mistakes that we learn.
Knowing that you’ll likely make a mistake can push you right out of your comfort zone, but again Vina believes it’s important to do so for your comfort zone to become larger. Do uncomfortable things. Face your fear.
What’s the goal again?
Vina advises that when you recognise you’re facing a challenge, it’s important to remind yourself of your master goal. This will help you focus on the right things. For example, when a challenge shows itself, ask yourself how this can benefit you and how you can help others. Are the answers in line with your goal? If so, then that’s where your focus needs to be.
More from this episode
Vina shares so much more with us in this episode, including how she’s specifically coping with being in isolation by herself in London, why she needed to ditch her perfectionism, and her strategy to maintaining her emotional health and mindset.
This interview was fantastic on so many levels, but what I loved most is what I’m going to leave you with today: The mind is what limits us the most – far more than the body ever could.
