How confident are you that the work you do is in alignment with what you want? If you’re like so many people, entrepreneurs or entrepreneurs-in-waiting, who realise they have serious changes to make, you might be struggling with exactly how you’re supposed to implement the plethora of information that is available to you on how to do this.
Today we’re talking about how understanding what needs to be done is different from knowing how to implement the tools and strategies that will help you achieve your goal.
Practical empowerment coach and business strategist, Sonja Thompkins, is dedicated to helping female entrepreneurs create more fulfilment in their lives and businesses. She’s got a fantastic motto: Think big, start small and practice with precision.
Meet Sonja Thompkins
Sonja has so many clients who have found themselves stuck in that old trap of working their life around their business, when the reality is, they began their entrepreneurship hoping to do the opposite.
That’s exactly what Sonja believes we should all be doing – working our business around our lives. Wouldn’t it be incredible to adjust your business around your life? Could you imagine how empowered you’d feel?
What’s stopping you? Don’t we all deserve to be empowered entrepreneurs? Heck yes we do!
Sonja’s sharing with us her top tips to implement practical empowerment. In other words, how do you ensure your business is in alignment with what you want, and how do you change it if it’s not?
If you’re an entrepreneur or are dreaming of being one someday, this episode is a must catch.
So, let’s dive right in!
How do you know if you’re in alignment?
Before we can tackle becoming empowered, we need to address the signs of being out of alignment with what you really want.
Sonja says a big sign is that the work you’re doing is hard – you’re truly hustling, grinding away at it day after day.
Rest assured, regardless of whether you’re in alignment or not, there is always work to be done, especially surrounding change. But when you’re in alignment, and your business truly reflects what you want, the work isn’t considered hard. It’s enjoyable even.
You can ask yourself a few questions and see if your honest answers make you feel empowered or not. Why did you start your business? What do you want? Is your business giving you what you said you wanted? Does what you want match what you’re able to give with your business?
If you realise that some changes need to be made, these next steps will help.
Are your conversations empowered?
Sonja suggests the first thing we need to do is to be, or get, clear on our goals. But to do that, we really need to be clear on our mindset.
The best way to do that is do pay attention to the conversations we’re having with ourselves. Yep, we all know we talk to ourselves! There’s nothing wrong with that, I promise!
In fact, paying close attention to those conversations gives you insight into your beliefs. If you keep saying it, then you believe it.
So, if you find yourself always saying something like, “I can’t do that”, “That won’t work for me”, “Things are never that easy”, “I’m not good enough”…
Then start listening.
Because, in plain terms, your goal can be wonderful and inspiration and even realistic, but if you don’t believe you can do it, should do it, or will do it, you’re not alignment.
And that means your beliefs are pushing you away from your goal, rather than towards it.
Is your goal empowered?
Sometimes we set these goals without really thinking them through. What do the words we are saying really mean?
Sonja uses the example of proclaiming a goal of wanting to double your business throughout this year. But is that really the goal? Doubling the business really means doubling the workload.
Is that truly what you want? Or are you really hoping to earn enough this year that you don’t have to worry about money and can spend time with your family?
Are the steps you’re taking empowered?
How are you planning to reach your goal, now that you’ve made sure it’s empowered, and you’ve weighed it against your empowered conversations you have with yourself?
You have every intention of reaching your goal, I’m assuming. So, how will you do it? And more importantly, is your plan in alignment with who you are, your energy levels, the time you want to spend in your business, the lifestyle you’re trying to create, or the reasons you became an entrepreneur in the first place?
There’s no point making a plan to reach your empowered goals if the plan itself causes you to move out of alignment with yourself. For example, having to be up all night to complete a project surely is not in alignment with your empowered goal of helping others.
When you created that goal, you didn’t dream of sleepless nights, your kids forgetting what you look like, and meals at your desk away from your family.
So, can you create an intentional plan of action to reach your goals, all while staying aligned? That’s true empowerment.
