Lessons from a Cancer Survivor

by Lisa Cybaniak

Natasha Lalwani is following her life's purpose after battling cancer. She's bringing awareness to emotional health.

Living through a major illness such as cancer changes you. It can leave you with internal wounds, feeling lost, bitter and wondering, “Why me?”.

Today we’re talking about the lessons we learn in life, and how to use those lessons to propel us forward, getting unstuck, to live the life of our dreams. We’re going to discuss a few therapies and alternative ways of looking at things, that allow you to heal from the inside out. Because when we have internal balance, outward balance follows.

Natasha Lalwani, is a certified Life and Happiness Coach, Dance Therapist, Motivational Speaker, and Host of her podcast, Unfiltered Emotions Unplugged. And of course, Natasha is also a cancer survivor.

Meet Natasha Lalwani

Natasha has been inspired by her life experiences, including cancer, to recognise her life purpose – to bring further awareness in emotional health. Being a survivor of cancer herself, Natasha knows first-hand the importance of learning to validate our emotions and de-clutter our thoughts and unwanted feelings.

In doing so, she has developed a form of dance therapy called E-Motion, which focuses on mental and emotional health. By synchronising the balance between the thought patterns and the emotions, Natasha is confident anyone can live a happy and prosperous life.

I’m so excited for you to listen to this episode, and/or read this post, because Natasha talks openly about the specific lessons she learned from having cancer, which most of us can relate to and implement, whether we’ve had cancer or not.

So many people feel stuck in their lives, and Natasha’s lessons, and tips that follow, can help you shift out of that rut. Whether your rut is with your health, mindset, wealth, business or relationships, these lessons and tips are a sure winner. Are you as excited as I am for this? Well, there’s no time like the present.

So, let’s dive right in!

Re-wire your thoughts & emotions

Natasha found that after battling cancer, she was left with internal wounds that made her feel bitter; asking “why me?”. She recognised this was unhealthy and was not in any way contributing to her recovery, so she decided to cleanse herself of these thoughts and emotions.

She started by recognising that coping with something like cancer is all part of the greater journey. There are lessons to be learned here, and she was going to learn them!

Of course, the lessons are bespoke for each person, but for Natasha, she really learned to live life to the fullest and use her experience to drive her forward in helping others.

Identify the problem

This tip is specifically for when you realise that there is some sort of block you are up against. Perhaps you’re feeling stuck in a rut with your emotions or your health. You feel like you have a goal and are working hard to reach it, but it just isn’t happening and you can’t figure out why.

Natasha suggests taking a look at the patterns in your unconscious mind. For example, what is your first thought when you are faced with a challenge? If it is to talk yourself down, belittling yourself, and coming up with all the reasons why you can’t do it, then that’s a good indication you have a core belief that is getting in your way.

Essentially, you are the block.

Our thoughts become our reality. The power of our beliefs is more than you could ever imagine, so if you can unlock the belief at play, you’ve won half the battle.

Go within

As hard as it may be to believe, you have all the answers to your questions. Your Higher Self knows all, it’s just a matter of building the connection to your true self, asking the questions and trusting in the answers.

There are many ways you can build this connection. Natasha suggests meditation and chakra cleansing, to name two. Meditation is a fantastic way to cleanse and unburden ourselves as it keeps us grounded to our core. When you find what works for you and you stick with it, creating a new daily habit, you begin to gain confidence, finding your inner strength.

Find what works for you

Meditation isn’t the only thing Natasha suggests. There are so many types of therapy out there, not to mention types of coaching available, styles of yoga, and even dance. Natasha is a dance therapist, after all!

It may seem time consuming to try out a lot of different options, but we can’t stress enough how important it is to have guidance in this process, in the form that works best for you. That means not only the type of guidance, but the person or people doing the guiding.

Take yoga for example. There are so many styles of yoga out there that if you were a first-time yoga student, how would you know which one suits you best? That’s why most yoga studios have class passes that allow you to try out several different types of classes, with different instructors. It’s not just the yoga you’re trying out; it’s also the teacher.

Start by making a list of all the things that interest you. Maybe they are things you tried in the past that you’d like to try again. Or perhaps they are things you’ve heard someone else mention that you thought were intriguing. This even includes therapies and coaching. Whatever the case, write them down and commit to trying them out.

Give yourself time

The unbalance that is in your life, whether it’s in your mindset, health, wealth, business, relationships, or even in spirituality, didn’t happen overnight. That means finding balance again will also not be overnight. Give yourself a break and give yourself the time you need to sort things out.

Remember, the best way to success is to create new habits that replace the old ones. That is certainly true whether we’re dealing with those limiting beliefs we spoke about earlier, we’re finding the connection within, or even when we’re finding what works best in guiding us.

It takes 21-66 days to create a new habit. So, if meditation is top of your list of things to try, then ideally, you’ll want to practice daily for 21 days to create the habit. If that sounds like too much right now, then come up with a something that will work for you and commit to doing it for a longer period, increasing how often you’ll do it as you go.

You know what it’s like when you start getting fitter, right? You feel better about yourself and like it! That propels you forward to continue with your fitness regime, perhaps even upping the number of times you are exercising, or inspiring to make dietary changes to match.

The same is true here. If you try meditation out weekly and begin to notice the day you’ve meditated is a calmer day where you feel grounded, then you’re more likely to make time a few more times a week. It will snowball from there.

More from this episode

Natasha and I talk about so much more in this episode, like how emotions can cause physical illness, and more on the value of meditation, not to mention how she was able to help someone with kidney stones, just through the power of movement!

I love Natasha’s lessons of re-wiring your thoughts and emotions, finding the root of the problem and getting help to accept what is happening on an emotional and physical level. As a society in general, we’ve lost touch with how intertwined our emotional, spiritual and physical states are, don’t you think? The truth is, each has a tremendous impact on the other.

As with everything, take the time you need with whatever you choose. You didn’t become unbalanced in a day, so you certainly will not find balance in one day either. Remember, if you’re balanced on the inside, it will reflect on the outside.
